Pick Your Planet: Solar System Crystals

Were you fascinated by space as a kid? Do you still love looking up at the sky and searching for constellations and planets?

The solar system is a marvel: an interconnected series of planets all orbiting around the Sun’s gravitational pull. It’s a powerful reality at the intersection between science and spirituality.

There’s a lot we can learn from each of the planets in our solar system, and today, we’re exploring how crystals can help us connect with the galaxy around us.

Mercury and Lapis Lazuli

Mercury is the smallest and fastest planet in the solar system. Situated closest to the Sun, it only takes Mercury 88 days to complete its orbit, so it makes sense that this planet was named for the swift Roman messenger god. In addition to its extreme speed, Mercury is also a planet of extreme temperatures. It lacks an atmosphere, which means that it can be both extremely hot (800° Fahrenheit) and extremely cold (-290° Fahrenheit).

In astrology, Mercury guides the mind. It is closely connected to intellect, study, and analysis, and it also has a strong effect on communication and technology. That’s why everything, from interpersonal relationships to cell phones, seems to go haywire during Mercury retrograde!

If you are a Gemini or Virgo, you may be especially affected by Mercury, since it is the ruling planet for these signs. Mercury gifts these signs with curiosity, flexibility, and friendliness; however, Mercury’s swift energy can sometimes prove overwhelming, spilling over into anxiety and a fear of being “stuck.”

As a stone of divine wisdom, Lapis Lazuli is the perfect complement to Mercury’s energy. Lapis Lazuli connects the Crown and Throat Chakras to promote an enlightened intellect, effective communication, and a quest for truth.

Venus and Rose Quartz

Venus is the next planet in the solar system and Earth’s closest neighbor. Because it is so close to us, Venus appears very bright from the Earth’s surface and can be easily spotted with the naked eye. Venus is also a planet with a bit of a rebellious streak, orbiting in the opposite direction from most of the other planets in the solar system. While Mercury had extreme temperatures because of its lack of an atmosphere, Venus’ extremely thick atmosphere traps heat in and makes it the hottest planet in our solar system.

And that “hotness” is pertinent to Venus’ spiritual meaning. Named for the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and sex, Venus is the only planet in our solar system named after a female deity, and it carries a strong divine feminine energy.

Venus resonates with our relationships and emotions. It is a planet of attraction and creation, encouraging both passion and harmony. Venus reminds you to seek out beauty and pleasure in everything; it shows you how to romanticize your life and indulge a little. Venus is the ruling planet for Libra and Taurus, encouraging these signs’ love of art and beauty.

Rose Quartz is the ultimate love crystal, making it the perfect stone to connect to Venus. This crystal doesn’t just attract romance; it encourages us to find love everywhere. Rose Quartz radiates divine compassion, teaching you how to find beauty in all of life’s little pleasures and how to truly love yourself.

Earth and Moss Agate

Third from the Sun, Earth is the planet we are most familiar with; after all, it is our home! Earth is the only planet whose name doesn’t come from Greco-Roman mythology. Instead, it comes from the Old English word “eorthe,” which means “the ground.”

As our home planet, Earth is strongly associated with stability, nourishment, and balance. Earth sustains life, and it is the only planet in our solar system to do so! In our busy modern lives filled with plastic and technology, it can be easy to feel disconnected from nature. However, Earth is still all around us: we walk on its surface, feed ourselves with its produce, and wake and sleep in harmony with its rotation.

Moss Agate resonates strongly with the Earth’s energies. This crystal symbolizes the connection between humans and nature, and it encourages us to align ourselves with the Earth’s cycles. Moss Agate reminds us that the planet goes through periods of life and death and we can always be renewed and reborn alongside nature.

Mars and Carnelian

Our neighbor Mars has been the subject of fascination and science fiction. It’s the most widely explored of all of the planets in our solar system, so we know that it experiences distinct seasons and has unique features like volcanos, canyons, and polar ice caps. Mars is named for the Roman god of war, but it’s nickname, “the red planet,” actually comes from Ancient Egyptian astrologers, who called it “Her Desher (the red one).” This name is particularly apt, because the high iron content in Mars’ soil gives it a vibrant red hue.

Mars is a planet of action and productivity. It gives you the courage and energy to chase your dreams. Mars isn’t about dreaming; it’s about doing. However, in excess, Martian energy can lead to aggression and rash decisions. Mars rules the Aries zodiac sign, imbuing Rams with their signature confidence.

Carnelian is the ideal crystal for handing Martian frequencies. Carnelian channels Mars’ courage and motivation while also tempering its wildest tendencies. This stone connects you to your deepest passions and gives you the energy to make your dreams a reality.

Jupiter and Jade

Jupiter is a gas giant and the largest planet in our solar system, which is fitting for a planet named after the Roman King of the Gods. Jupiter is so large that 1,000 Earths could fit inside it, and it has been home to a massive storm, called the “Great Red Spot,” for centuries.

Jupiter is the planet of prosperity. It controls wealth, luck, and influence, but it also resonates strongly with philosophy and spirituality. As its namesake implies, Jupiter helps master our lives like a wise ruler, and it encourages us to build sustainable, holistic abundance. Jupiter rules Sagittarius, assisting the Archer’s quest for purpose and success.

Jade helps you follow Jupiter’s wise approach to abundance. This crystal attracts luck, but it also inspires renewal and truth. Jade’s stabilizing vibrations ensure that you approach your life mindfully and utilize your talents to the best of your ability.

Saturn and Stromatolite

Saturn is the farthest planet from Earth that can still be seen with the naked eye, and with a telescope, its stunning rings become visible. Saturn is closely related to Jupiter in terms of size, location, and atmosphere, so it makes sense that it was named for Jupiter’s father, Saturn, the Titan who ruled agriculture.

Saturn’s astrological energy is all about structure—just think of its beautifully organized rings! This planet helps you identify your long-term goals, and then it gives you the discipline and motivation to actually achieve them. Saturn reminds us that boundaries can be healthy and necessary. As the ruler of ambitious Capricorns, Saturn shows everyone how to claim their dreams through hard work.

Saturn takes seven years to move through each zodiac sign, and each of its visits can mark a major point in your development. Saturn’s influence is most powerfully felt when it returns to the exact position it was during your birth, at ages 29 and 59.

Hardworking Saturn’s frequencies harmonize well with Stromatolite. Stromatolite is a fossil that slowly formed over hundreds of years, echoing Saturn’s lessons of sustained work. Each layer of this crystal also reminds you Saturn’s returns, and it encourages you to work toward your long-term projects.

Uranus and Malachite

Thanks to its unique, 90-degree angle from its orbital pattern, Uranus looks like it spins sideways, and that’s one clue to this ice giant’s eccentric energy. Uranus also has the distinction of being the first planet to ever be discovered by telescope, when William Herschel found it in 1781. After realizing that he had found a planet, not a star, Herschel pushed to have it named King George III of England; however, his colleague, Johann Elert Bode pushed to have the planet named for the Greek sky god and the father of the Titans, Uranus.

In astrology, Uranus symbolizes rebellion. It is a planet that asks you to embrace the things that make you unique, follow your deepest passions, and question everything around you. Uranus also shepherds us through periods of radical transformation, reminding us to roll with the punches. Uranus rules the zodiac sign of Aquarius, encouraging them to always look ahead to the future.

Transformative Malachite is the perfect companion to Uranus’ energy. Malachite teaches you how to accept change as a beautiful transformation, just like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Even though change is scary, nothing can get better without it.

Neptune and Iolite

Neptune is an ice giant so far from the sun that its light barely reaches the planet’s surface, and Neptune’s orbit takes 165 years. First discovered in 1846, Neptune was named for the Roman god of the sea. Neptune moves very slowly, and it is sometimes called a “generational planet,” since it stays in a sign for fourteen-year periods.

Neptune’s nautical name is especially fitting, because this planet resonates strongly with the element of water. Neptune controls intuition, imagination, and mysticism. It encourages us to look within and discover what aspects of ourselves we may be hiding. Neptune also connects us with the spiritual realm, expanding our perspectives. A highly artistic planet, Neptune helps us process this mystical information through art. Therefore, it is no surprise that Neptune rules dreamy Pisces.

Iolite works with your Third Eye Chakra to connect to Neptune’s energy. This crystal taps into your creativity and intuition to better understand yourself and the world around you. Together, Iolite and Neptune inspire you to achieve your full potential.

Bonus Planet: Pluto and Obsidian

While Pluto was been technically demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006, it still plays an important role in astrology. Pluto is very small for a planet, being about half as wide as the continental United States, and it is so extremely cold (-387° Fahrenheit) that it will never sustain life. After the planet’s discovery in 1930, 11-year-old Venetia Burney recommended the name Pluto, after the Roman god of the underworld.

Pluto is the planet of fate. Its energy is very similar to the Death card in the Tarot, which is fitting for the god of the underworld. Pluto encourages you to accept the shadow self. This planet deals with radical, often painful change and the skills you need to persevere in spite of it. Pluto’s intensity is mirrored in the sign it rules, Scorpio.

Obsidian is a crystal formed through volcanic activity, making it a perfect match for Pluto’s overwhelming and transformative energy. Obsidian grounds you in your power. It helps you see the objective reality of a situation and try to work through it. With Obsidian and Pluto, you can become a phoenix rising from the ashes.

What planet’s energy do you need now? You can follow your intuition, or you can check your horoscope to see which planet may be having a particular pull on you today. Either way, crystals are here to help!

Don’t Blow Up: Crystals for Anger

Anger is a perfectly natural emotion, and it can even motivate us to do great things, like taking political action, reevaluating our routines, and expressing our needs. However, it’s very difficult to channel anger constructively if you’re constantly flying off the handle.

Here are some of our favorite crystals for anger management:

Amethyst works with the Crown and Third Eye Chakras to emit soothing vibrations. It can address stress and pent-up emotions before they explode into anger. Amethyst is also a powerful cycle-breaker, so if you notice that anger has become a habit, it will help you re-evaluate your routines and release what no longer serves you.

Find Your Inner Empress

Tarot cards are rich in symbolism, and they have important lessons to teach us—if we’re ready to listen. With summer in its full, abundant glory, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the third card of the Major Arcana, the Empress.

The Empress Tarot Card Meaning

The first step to connecting with the Empress is to observe the card. As you look at this traditional depiction from the Rider-Waite tarot deck, you will notice various symbols:

  • A crown with stars
  • A staff
  • A gold necklace
  • Pomegranates
  • Plush pillows
  • A flowing river
  • A tree
  • A heart-shaped shield with the symbol for Venus
  • Wheat

The Empress represents the divine feminine. Her energy relates strongly to abundance, nurturing, and fertility. The Empress’ star crown embodies her connection between the natural world and the spiritual realm; the stars are celestial bodies, but each star also corresponds to a month of the year. This symbolism is further strengthened when you look at the setting around the Empress; she is peacefully ruling over a lush forest, like Mother Earth herself.

As a representation of Mother Earth, the Empress symbolizes the divine feminine power of creation and the nurturing energy that sustains life; just look at the flowing river behind her. The Empress encourages us to take care of ourselves, others, and our planet. The pomegranates dotting her flowing gown further underline this natural connection while also symbolizing fecundity.

The Empress takes her fertile energy to encourage all kind of creation, from art to sensuality. The Empress symbolizes birth—both literal birth and the metaphorical birth of art or a new chapter of your life. If there was any doubt about the Empress’ relationship to love and romance, her heart-shaped shield with the symbol of Venus makes the connection clear.

The Empress also has a strong affinity for luxury. She is wearing rich gold jewelry and reclining on red velvet cushions. At her feet, you can see a large quantity of wheat, symbolizing both abundant food and gold. Her staff and title highlight her mastery; the Empress has completed the emotional work that is necessary for true prosperity.

The Empress calls on us to appreciate beauty. She reminds us to pay attention to all of life’s little pleasures and connect with nature. Her innate sensuality encourages us to experience all of our senses and enjoy the tranquility that this mindful approach to life brings.

Once we can appreciate the world around us, the Empress also asks us to create. She wants us to explore our emotions through art and all forms of self-expression. However we choose to create, we contribute to the world and make it better.

Through all of these activities, the Empress shows us the path to true abundance. When we are fully in tune with the planet and the divine and willing to be an active co-creator in the universe, we will enjoy prosperity.
